This photo was taken of participants of the first meeting of our Somerset Lynching Truth & Reconciliation Committee in February of 2020. The committee is led by Dr. Kirkland Hall who is also a board member of the Maryland Lynching Truth & Reconciliation Commission which was created in 2019.
We plan to take a closer look at the history of lynching in Somerset County for the purpose of understanding the circumstances, to identify any misinformation, and to seek ways of healing from the effects from the history of racial violence which lingers today. You cannot learn from history if you don’t know that history. Even though considerable time has passed, there is still much history to be identified.
